Federal government enters first shutdown in 17 years as lawmakers remain divided over Obamacare


WASHINGTON — Congress bickered its way Monday past a midnight deadline that triggered a shutdown of the federal government, an embarrassing disruption that an angry President Obama called “entirely preventable.”Maneuvering and finger pointing were still taking place and likely to continue into the early hours Tuesday, but hope for a breakthrough was dim.The gridlock reached as a result of Republican efforts to scuttle Obama’s signature health care law set the stage for the first government shutdown since 1995, a step that Obama said would “throw a wrench into the gears” of a recovering economy.Facing the deadline, the House and Senate could not agree on legislation to keep the government from running out of money. The House insisted on adding provisions making major changes to Obamacare; the Senate and Obama said the health care law would stand as is.
