Stevie Wonder Vows To Cease Performing In States With “Stand Your Ground” Law

Famed singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder has responded to George Zimmerman‘s acquittal by vowing to never perform in states with so-called “Stand Your Ground” laws on the books. While performing Sunday evening at the Québec City Festival, the 22-time Grammy Award winner announced his pledge in reaction to Saturdaynight’s verdict. “I decided today that until the ‘Stand Your Ground’ law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again,” he said.“As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world.”The state’s “Stand Your Ground” law played no immediate role in the Zimmerman trial,as the defendant waived his right to a pretrial immunity hearing under the statute. But Wonder and others have objected to the law because of Zimmerman citing the law as an initial defense against arrest following the shooting; as well as their belief that the law emboldened the defendant to use deadly force against 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. If he follows through with the pledge, Wonder’s boycott of any state with “Stand Your Ground” laws could lead to a drastically limited tour schedule, seeing as there are at least 25 states with some form of the law on the books.
